SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 Patch to update an installation of Microsoft Office 97 SR-1, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office SR-2
Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 completed unsuccessfully. See the log file in the Microsoft Office installation directory for details.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\97sr2_0.log

If you open the log file, you see text similar to the following:

Lifting up resource from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\ <TMP File> to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\<Program File>
fail
sr2 patch fail

where <TMP File> is the name of a TMP file (for example, Sr1a292.tmp) and <Program File> is the name of a file used by a program included in Microsoft Office 97 (for example, Msaccess.exe, Excel.exe, Winword.exe, Powerpnt.exe, Outllib.dll, etc.).

The following text appears at the end of the log file:

restored C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\<TMP File> to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\<Program File>
Backup has finished.

The sr2 patch fails

The sr2 patch has failed

CAUSE

This problem may occur if any of the files that are being updated by the SR- 2 Patch are set as read-only or stored in a location that you do not have full access (for example, a folder on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT). In this case, the SR-2 Patch is unable to update the files, and the SR- 2 Patch fails.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, make sure that none of the files that are being updated by the SR-2 Patch are read-only. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Using a text editor, open the log file created by the SR-2 Patch. Look for a line of text that begins with the word "Lifting" and is followed by a line containing only the word "fail".
  2. When you find such a line of text, write down the name of the file listed at the end of the line (for example, Msaccess.exe).
  3. Exit the text editor.
  4. Using Windows Explorer, go to the folder that contains the file. Usually, this is the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder.
  5. Right-click the file. On the shortcut menu, click Properties. Click to clear the Read-Only check box, and click OK.

Also, if the file is stored in a folder on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT, you must have full access to the file. Right-click the file and click Properties on the shortcut menu. Click the Security tab, and then click Permissions. If you are unable to use this dialog box to give yourself full access to the file, check with your system administrator to make this change.

  1. Run the SR-2 Patch again.
