Article ID: 187686

Article Last Modified on 11/1/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition

This article was previously published under Q187686

SYMPTOMS

Applications that use the LookupAccountSid() function on a multihomed system may intermittently generate the following access violation in the calling function:

Access violation (0x00000006)
ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE

The problem occurs when this function is executed in a separate thread for each attached network, on Windows NT computers that are attached to multiple networks.

CAUSE

After the second thread completes, it attempts to destroy the client context handle, using the same handle that was closed by the first thread. This causes the function to generate the access violation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
