APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q187549

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Windows Setup tab or the Install/Uninstall tab in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may not see any of the following programs:

  • Microsoft Fax
  • Microsoft Exchange
  • Microsoft Windows Messaging
  • Microsoft Mail

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the programs listed in the "Symptoms" section are not installed when you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1x to Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

If you need to install Windows Messaging, Microsoft Fax, or a Microsoft Mail workgroup post office, follow the steps below.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Outlook 97 or Microsoft Outlook 98 and you want to install Microsoft Fax, you must uninstall Outlook, install Microsoft Fax, and then reinstall Outlook. For more information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

TITLE : XCLN: Can't Add Fax Service After Installing Exchange

  1. Place your Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, and then open the following folder:

    Tools\Oldwin95\Message\US

  2. Double-click the Wms.exe file to install Windows Messaging and the Microsoft Mail workgroup post office utility.
  3. Double-click the Awfax.exe file to install Microsoft Fax.
  4. Restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

MORE INFORMATION

While they are not parts of the Windows 98 product, a version of Windows Messaging, Microsoft Fax, and a Microsoft Mail workgroup post office are included on the Windows 98 CD-ROM. These programs are made available so that you can reinstall files if the upgraded components become damaged. Using these files on non-upgrade installations of Windows 98 was not fully tested by Microsoft.

Windows Messaging is not intended to work with Exchange Server Client 5.0 and should not be installed on a computer on which Exchange Server Client 5.0 is installed.

For information about how to configure an Exchange or Windows Messaging profile, or a Microsoft Mail workgroup post office, please see the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Although Microsoft Fax is not actually part of the Windows 98 product, a Microsoft Fax installation utility is included on the Windows 98 CD-ROM. If you need the ability to send and receive faxes in Windows 98, you can use the installation utility to install Microsoft Fax or refresh files if Microsoft Fax was installed prior to upgrading to Windows 98. Although running Microsoft Fax on a clean installation of Windows 98 was not fully tested during product development, there is currently no known reason that it will not function exactly as it does in Windows 95. Microsoft will make every reasonable effort to support running the version of Microsoft Fax located on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
