SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Word 97 document containing an updated object in Microsoft Word 6.x, the object does not reflect changes made in Word 97 when all of the following are true:

  • The document was created in Microsoft Word 7.x for Windows 95, and it contains an inserted object.
  • The Word 7.0 for Windows 95 document was opened in Word 97.
  • Changes were made to the object in the document opened in Word 97, and the document was saved in Word 97 format.
  • The document was opened in Word 6.x using the Word 97 Import Converter, Msword8.cnv.

CAUSE

You opened the Word 97 document file using the Word 97 Import Converter, Msword8.cnv. The version of this converter that you are using does not properly convert updated objects in Word 97 that were originally created in Word 7.x for Windows 95.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of the Word 97 Import Converter. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, you can save the document from Word 97 as either Rich Text Format (*.rtf) or Word 6.0/95 (*.doc). Either of the converters properly displays the updated object. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the document in Word 97.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save as type box, select either Rich Text Format (*.rtf) or Word 6.0/95 (*.doc).
  4. Click Save, and then click Close on the File menu.
  5. Open the document in Word 6.x.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with certain versions of the Word 97 Import converter. This problem is corrected in the version of the converter available with Microsoft Office 97 SR-2.
