SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you paste tasks or resources in a project, you may receive one of the following error messages.

In Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

When you click Details, you receive the following error message:

WINPROJ caused an invalid page fault in module WINPROJ.EXE at <address>.

In Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINPROJ.EXE
Exception: access violation <number>, Address: <address>.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

The project contains close to the limit of about 7,500 individually formatted cells, or 3,500 individually formatted task bars.

-and-

You paste tasks that have individually formatted cells or bars. Or, you paste resources that have individually formatted cells.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, paste tasks in a view that does not contain formatted cells or bars. For example, create a new Task Sheet view or Resource Sheet view. To create a new view, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click More Views.
  2. Click New, and then click OK.
  3. In the View Definition in <Project Name> dialog box, type a Name for the new view, then pick the type of Screen, Table, and Filter you want to use. Click OK.
  4. Click Apply.

You can now paste tasks safely, because the new view contains no individual bar or cell formating.

STATUS
