Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) version 2.0 shipped on December 2, 1997. It is provided as part of the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Option Pack. For information about the Windows NT Server 4.0 Option Pack and how to download it, see the following Web site:

MTS 2.0 has been updated in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 and later. To obtain the latest updates to the core MTS runtime, you also need to install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or later.

IMPORTANT: To correctly deploy the latest version of MTS, you need to apply the Service Pack after you apply the Option Pack. If you installed the Service Pack before you installed the Option Pack, simply reapply the Service Pack.

Note for Microsoft Windows 2000 and COM+

On Microsoft Windows 2000, there is no need to install MTS or the NT Option Pack. COM+ replaces MTS as the component manager and can be administered by using the Component Services Snap-In under Administrative Tools.

To add COM+, Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ), and other operating system components that ship with the Windows NT Server 4.0 Option Pack, use the Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel, select Windows Components, and then install the components that you need.
