SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, in a consolidated project, when you link from a summary task in one inserted project to a task in a second inserted project, you may receive any of the following behaviors:

  • The screen may begin to flash endlessly.


  • You may receive a scheduling message that repeats endlessly.


  • The word "calculate" appears at the bottom of the screen. (This behavior occurs when Calculation is set to Manual.)


CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You have a consolidated project that contains at least two inserted projects.


  • One inserted project is scheduled From Finish.


  • A second inserted project is scheduled From Start.


  • In the consolidated project, you link the summary task in the first inserted project (scheduled From Finish), to a task in the second inserted project (scheduled From Start).


WORKAROUND

Remove the link between the summary task the in first inserted project and the task in the second inserted project.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
