APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Word 98 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q184155

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word 98 Macintosh Edition document in an earlier version of Word, the following field error may be displayed:

Error! Bookmark not defined.

Viewing field codes (ALT+F9) displays the following field:

   {autoindex "<Any text>" \* Mergeformat }

CAUSE

The document contained a DocVariable field that was inserted and saved from Word 98 and the document has been:

  • Opened in an earlier version of Word (6.0 or 7.0) using the Word 98 import converter. -or-

  • Opened and saved from a earlier version of Word using the Word 98 import converter and has been reopened in Word 98.

The Autoindex field is a converted DocVariable field. Because the DocVariable field is not available in versions of Word prior to Word 98, the conversion process does not convert it. The document variables are lost during the conversion and cannot be retrieved if the document is saved in the earlier version of Word.

WORKAROUND

To retain the document variables, while in Word 98, use the following steps to save the document using the Microsoft Word 6.0/95 or the Rich Text Format converter:

  1. Open the document in Word 98.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. From the Save File As Type list in the Save As dialog box, select either "Word 6.0/95" or "Rich Text Format."

STATUS

For more information about document variable fields, click Contents And Index on the Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in Word Help, type the following text
