SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project 98, negative Baseline Cost and BCWS values appear, even though there are no negative costs on tasks in the project.
CAUSE
The negative costs appear when you assign a zero unit or zero work resource to a task and the cost accrual setting for the resource is at the End.
WORKAROUND
To workaround this problem, for resources that are assigned to tasks at zero units or zero work, change the cost accrual from End to either Start or Prorated. To do so, follow these steps:
- On the View menu, click Resource Sheet.
- Click the resource you want to change.
- On the Project menu, click Resource Information.
- Click the Costs tab.
- Change the Cost accrual to either Start or Prorated.
- Click OK.
- Select the affected tasks (the ones with the erroneous negative costs).
NOTE: If a task has progress applied, you will need to first remove the progress before performing step 8. This is done by changing the task's % Complete to zero.
- On the Tools menu, click Tracking. Click Save Baseline and click the Selected Tasks button. Click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 98 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
