SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message when attempting to establish a secure online connection, via modem or Internet in Microsoft Money:
Money requires a high level of data encryption when connecting to a server. Money has determined that your system is currently unable to encrypt data at the level Money requires. Money will not connect to a server until your system can support the required level of encryption.
To fix this: Download the latest security upgrade from http://www.microsoft.com/money/security. Do you want to do this now?
If you click Yes, Money uses your Internet connection method specified in Options to take you to the download site.
The error message for Money 5.0 is slightly different:
Money requires a high level of data encryption when connecting to a server. Money has determined that your system is currently unable to encrypt data at the level Money requires. Money will not connect to a server until your system can support the required level of encryption.
To fix this, reinstall Money from your original product disks.
Reinstalling Money 5.0 does not resolve this error.
CAUSE
The North American versions of Money require 128-bit data encryption to establish secure online connections. The file Schannel.dll provides data encryption. The 128-bit version of Schannel is only available for distribution in the United States and Canada. It is unlawful to export outside of North America without an approved Department of Commerce export license.
This error message can occur if you install Money after installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, or if you install Money 98 on a Windows NT system that has not been upgraded to Service Pack 3.
RESOLUTION
If you are in North America, this Microsft Web site will direct to the appropriate site to download the 128-bit version of Schannel.dll for your version of Windows.
