SYMPTOMS

When clicking to start one of the Microsoft Outlook 97 items on the Microsoft Office Shortcut bar, you may receive the following error message:

Outlook could not start because a location to send and receive mail could not be found. To add a location, such as a personal folder file, double-click the Mail icon in Windows Control Panel.

You may not receive this message when starting Outlook from the icon.

CAUSE

The delivery location in your default Windows Messaging Profile is set to (None).

RESOLUTION

Modify the default Windows Messaging Profile to select a mail delivery location.

MORE INFORMATION

Clicking one of the Outlook item buttons on the Office Shortcut bar uses the default Windows Messaging Profile to start Outlook. Depending on which button was clicked, Outlook opens ready to send a New Message, make a New Appointment, define a New Task, set up a New Contact, record a New Journal Entry, or make a New Note. If this profile is not set to define a mail delivery location, the error above will occur.

Defining a Mail Delivery Location in the Default Profile

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Mail and Fax icon.
  3. On the Delivery tab, click to select a delivery location from the "Deliver new mail to the following location" list and click OK.
