  • Microsoft Money 98
  • == Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 3 ==

SYMPTOMS

After installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and Windows NT Service Pack 3, you receive error messages when trying to open an existing Microsoft Money data file, convert a previous data file, or create a new data file.

When you attempt to open an existing Money data file on a Windows NT system, you receive the following error message:

<Path>/<file name> is corrupted or is not a Money data file. Make sure you are opening a file with an MNY extension. If you have chosen the correct file and it could not be accessed, you will need to open your most recent backup file to access your data.

If you attempt to convert a Money data file from an earlier version, you receive the following error message:

There has been an error reading or writing to the disk.

If you attempt to create a new file, you receive several error messages, beginning with the following error message:

The new file ’<Path>/<file name> cannot be created. Please make sure that the new file name does not contain any of the following characters: /:*?"<>|. Also, Make sure the new file is being created on a disk that is not write-protected and has sufficient room to store the new file.

When you click OK, you may receive the following message:

Not enough memory is available. If you have several applications open at the same time, you might need to close one of them before starting Money.

Clicking OK to this message, may bring up the following Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error message:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:FilesMoney.EXE

R6025 -pure virtual function call

CAUSE

If you install the Windows NT Service Pack 3 (SP3) after installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, the Windows system cryptography provider is not properly registered in the Windows registry. If this occurs, programs that rely on encryption may fail to operate properly.

Since Money encrypts file data, this scenario can temporarily prevent Money from properly interpreting your data file. This causes Money to report that your file is corrupted, or the other error messages listed earlier.

RESOLUTION

The preferred order of installation is Windows NT Service Pack 3, followed by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. However, If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 after you installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, you must follow the instructions listed in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Readme.txt file.

MORE INFORMATION

The following information is a summary of the information in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Readme.txt file.

If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 after you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, you must specify that you do not want Setup to overwrite newer files.

To update the registry after SP3 is reinstalled, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Money if it is running.

  2. On the Start menu, point to Find and then click Files Or Folders.

  3. In the Named box, type the following and click Find Now:

  5. On the Start menu, click Run.

  6. Type the following in the Open box.

    regsvr32 [“path”].dll

Where [“path”] is the path you noted in step 4.
