WD95: Extra Tab Inserted in Multilevel Numbered Paragraphs

Article ID: 174997

Article Last Modified on 8/17/2005

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Word 95 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Word 95a

This article was previously published under Q174997

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word 97 document in Word 7.x for Windows 95, an extra tab setting is inserted at the beginning of paragraphs formatted as Outline Numbered (Multilevel) with linked heading styles.

CAUSE

Word 97 bases the first line indent on an internal tab setting, and Word 7.x numbering bases the first line indent on the "distance from number to text" setting. The Word 97 Import Converter (Mswrd832.cnv) cannot map this feature back to the Word 7.x "distance from number to text" setting and retains the tab.

NOTE: To view the "distance from number to text" setting, follow these steps:

  1. In Word 7.x, click Bullets And Numbering on the Format menu.
  2. On the Multilevel tab, click Modify.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of the Word 97 Import Converter. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

This problem is corrected in the version of the converter available with Microsoft Office 97 SR-2. For more information about how to obtain the latest converter, please see the "Resolution" section of this article.
