SYMPTOMS

After installing Microsoft Money 98 Web Trial Version, if you attempt to reinstall using the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel, you are presented with the following Setup error message:

Setup could not open the file: C:

NOTE: The path will vary depending on where you installed Windows.

You can only Abort the Setup. Retry and Ignore only repeat the error.

CAUSE

The self-extracting MoneyWeb.exe file that is downloaded to your computer, extracts the Setup files to your Windowsdirectory and then opens Setup.exe from this location. When Setup is complete, these Setup files are removed from the Windowsdirectory.

Setup writes the installation path to Setup.stf file which points to the location of the Setup files. For the Web Trial installation, this is the Windowsdirectory.

When opening Setup from Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel, Setup is unable to find the Money98.1 cabinet file during this attempt to reinstall because the file was removed from the Windowsdirectory when Setup completed the first time.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following two methods:

  1. If the original self extracting MoneyWeb.exe file that was downloaded is still available, double-click it, to re-extract the setup files.

or

  1. Re-download the trial version of Money 98.

STATUS

This behavior is by design in Money 98.
