Last reviewed: November 3, 1997
Article ID: Q174514

The information in this article applies to:

  • The Microsoft Network, versions 1.0, 1.05, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, 2.5

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may be unable to do so. Or, you may be able to connect successfully, but then you may be disconnected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your modem is not capable of using data compression with MSN, or if your modem's maximum speed setting is incorrect.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Disable Data Compression

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Modems.
  2. Click your modem, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Connection tab, click Advanced.
  4. If the Use Error Control check box is available, click to select it. If the Use Error Control check box is unavailable, continue to the next step.

NOTE: If you have a 28,800 bits per second (bps) or faster modem, click the Compress Data check box to clear it.

  5. Under Use Flow Control, click Hardware.
  6. In the Modulation Type box, click Standard.
  7. Click OK, click OK, click Close, and then close Control Panel.
  8. Restart your computer, and then test to determine if the issue is resolved by connecting to MSN. If the issue still exists, continue to the next step. If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps.
  9. If your modem is listed as a generic modem, continue to the next step. If your modem is not listed as a generic modem, skip to the next section.
  10. View the manufacturer's documentation included with your modem to determine the AT command (a command that sends instructions to a modem) that disables data compression.
  11. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Modems.
  12. Click your modem, and then click Properties.
  13. On the Connection tab, click Advanced.
  14. In the Extra Settings box, type the AT command to disable data compression.
  15. Click OK, click OK, click Close, and then close Control Panel.
  16. Restart your computer, and then test to determine if the issue is resolved by connecting to MSN. If the issue still exists, continue to the next section. If the issue is resolved, do not follow the remaining steps.

Set Modem Maximum Speed

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Modems.
  2. Click your modem, and then click Properties.
