Slow Shutdown Or Data Loss When Shutting Down

Last reviewed: February 26, 1998
Article ID: Q174457

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server versions 4.0 and 4.0a
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you shut down your computer running Microsoft Windows NT, one of the following symptoms may occur:

  • Shutdown takes a long time (more than one minute).
  • When you restart the system, there is lost or corrupted data.

CAUSE

Some services do not notify the Service Control Manager when they have received a shutdown message during system shutdown. As a result, the Service Control Manager stops responding (hangs) while waiting for the service and will be shut down itself by the operating system during system shutdown. In turn, shutdown messages are not sent to the remaining services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.
