SYMPTOMS

When you try to reapply or uninstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 after installing Internet Explorer 4.0, you may receive the following warning message:

Update.exe
This program may not run correctly because of the new features in Internet Explorer 4.0. You may need to obtain an updated version of this program. For information about obtaining an updated version, click Details. Or, if you want to try running this program, click Details to determine whether it will cause other problems. Then, if running this program will not cause other problems, click Run Program.

Or, after you reinstall Service Pack 3 for Windows NT 4.0 when Internet Explorer 4.01 is already installed, you may see the following entry in Event Viewer:

Event ID 7024
The task scheduler service terminated with server specific error 2148073478

Or, you may receive the following error message after you reinstall SP3 after installing Internet Explorer 4:

CAPI: The install program could not open the registry

This error message occurs every time you start Internet Explorer, but Internet Explorer runs correctly after you click OK.

CAUSE

This warning occurs for the following reasons:

  • Reapplying Service Pack 3 may render the Internet Explorer 4.0 shell (and other components) inoperable and invalidate your Service Pack 3 Uninstall folder.
  • Uninstalling Service Pack 3 may render the Internet Explorer 4.0 shell (and other components) inoperable.

RESOLUTION

You can reapply Service Pack 3 (by clicking Run Program) if you choose the following options while you are reapplying the service pack:

  • Choose "No, I do not want to create an Uninstall directory."
  • Choose "No" whenever you are prompted to replace newer files.

After Service Pack 3 is reinstalled, follow these steps to update the registry:

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  3. Click OK.

If you are trying to uninstall Service Pack 3, click Cancel and uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 before uninstalling Service Pack 3.

    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Task Scheduler 1.0 (Remove Only), and then click Add/Remove. Click Yes to confirm.

    6. In the Additional Internet Explorer Enhancements section, click to select the Task Scheduler check box, and then click Next.
    7. Follow the instructions to download and install the component.
    8. When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.

MORE INFORMATION

Do not uninstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. Doing so renders the Internet Explorer 4.0 shell inoperable. If you are reapplying Service Pack 3, you can safely click Run Program if you follow the procedure in the Resolution section of this article.

NOTE: Reapplying Service Pack 3 after Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed results in an Apps.hlp warning with the following incorrect text:

Do not uninstall Windows 95 Service Pack 1. Doing so will render the Internet Explorer 4.0 shell inoperable.

This problem is fixed in Internet Explorer 4.01 (Version 4.72.2106.8). The following text is displayed when you reapply Service Pack 3: If you reinstall Service Pack 3 for Windows NT Workstation version 4.0 or Windows NT Server version 4.0 after you install Internet Explorer version 4.0, specify, when prompted, that you do not want Service Pack 3 to write over any newer files. After Service Pack 3 is reinstalled, update the registry:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In Open, type: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  3. Click OK.

Note that you can click the "Don't display this message in the future" check box to select it to prevent this warning from being displayed when you reapply Service Pack 3 in the future.
