The Microsoft Network Stops Responding After Initial Sign-In

The information in this article applies to:

  • The Microsoft Network versions 2.0, 2.5

SYMPTOMS

The first time you attempt to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, MSN may stop responding (hang) immediately after you sign in.

CAUSE

Netscape Navigator may be installed on your computer as your default Web browser. MSN cannot download the files needed to complete installation if Netscape Navigator is your default browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer must be your default Web browser to complete the installation of MSN.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, configure Internet Explorer to be your default Web browser. To do so, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the The Internet icon on the desktop, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Programs tab, click the "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" check box to select it.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.
  6. When you are prompted to make Internet Explorer your default browser, click Yes.
