Err Msg: Guide.exe Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module...

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive the following error message:

   Guide.exe caused an invalid page fault in module mcm.dll.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if some MSN files are either the wrong version or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, reinstall MSN and Microsoft Exchange. To do so, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. On the Windows Setup tab, click both the Microsoft Exchange and the The Microsoft Network check boxes to clear them, and then click OK.
  4. Restart the computer. To do so, click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart The Computer, and then click Yes.
  5. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  6. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  7. On the Windows Setup tab, click both the Microsoft Exchange and the The Microsoft Network check boxes to select them.
  8. Click OK. If you are prompted with the following message, click No each time the message appears:

          Version Conflict. A file being copied is older than the one
          currently on your computer. Do you want to keep the existing file?
  9. Insert your MSN CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. If MSN Setup starts, follow the instructions on the screen to set up MSN, and then skip the remaining steps in this article. If MSN Setup does not start automatically, continue to the next step.
  10. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
  11. Click the CD-ROM drive that contains your MSN CD-ROM.
  12. Double-click the Setup.exe file, and then follow the instructions on the screen to set up MSN.
