IC: GIF Import May Fail After Removing Image Composer 1.0 Beta

Q173938

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

 - Microsoft Image Composer, versions 1.0, 1.0a
 - Microsoft Office 97 for Windows
 - Microsoft Office for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a, 7.0b
 - Microsoft Publisher 97
 - Microsoft Publisher for Windows 95, version 3.0
---------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
========

If you installed a beta version of Microsoft Image Composer 1.0 prior to
December 4, 1996 (build 926), removed it, and do not plan to install a
newer version, you might experience difficulties inserting GIF files into
Microsoft Office documents.

CAUSE
=====

The Setup.stf file created by Image Composer marks the GIF registry entries as
safe to remove. So, when you remove the beta version of Image Composer,
the registry entries are removed and the GIF filters no longer work in any
program that uses them.

RESOLUTION
==========

Use one of the following methods to resolve this problem.

Method 1: Reinstall
-------------------

Reinstall a program that installs the GIF filter. This will restore the registry
entries for the filters. Do not reinstall the beta version of Image Composer.

Method 2: Download a Patch
--------------------------

Obtain the patch available for download from the following Microsoft World Wide
Web Site:

   http://www.microsoft.com/imagecomposer/usingic/micupdat.exe
