SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project, if you move or replace a resource assignment for a task that contains Actual Work or Actual Cost, the Actual Work or Actual Cost for the task will be lost, for example:
If the resource assignment is moved, the Actual Work and Actual Cost for the assignment will be removed from the original task and moved to the new assignment.
If the resource is replaced, the Actual Work will be lost and the Remaining Work will be assigned to the replacing resource.
CAUSE
Actual Work and Actual Cost can not be moved from one task to another with a resource assignment. Therefore, the Actual Work or Actual Cost will be removed from the original task.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
Method 1: If Moving an Assignment
Instead of moving an in-progress assignment to a new task, first create a new assignment for the resource on the new task. Then modify the original assignment so that Remaining Work is zero and the Actual Work is unchanged.
Method 2: If Replacing an Assignment
Instead of using the Replace tool to remove an existing resource and add a new resource in it's place, modify the existing resource's assignment so that remaining work is zero, and then add a new resource to complete the remaining amount of work for the task.
NOTE: The Cost for the new assignment will be recalculated when you perform either of these steps.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
