SYMPTOMS

If you send a file attachment from Microsoft Mail for the Macintosh to Microsoft Outlook 97, the attached file may indicate a larger file size using Outlook, version 8.02, than if you use Outlook, version 8.01.

RESOLUTION

This problem does not occur if the sender names the file with a three letter extension prior to attaching it to the e-mail message. If the attached file contains a three letter extension in the file name, the additional header information does not appear in Outlook and the file size remains the same as in previous Outlook versions.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem in Microsoft Outlook 97, versions 8.02 and 8.03, and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The following mail configuration was used to test this problem:

  • Client Macintosh computer running Mail for Macintosh v.3.1d
  • Mail for Macintosh Server v. 3.1d with Microsoft Exchange connector version 4.0 installed.(This is the gateway between Mail for the Macintosh and Microsoft Exchange 5.0)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.0 running on an NT Server 4.0 SP3 with the Mail connection installed with the Macintosh MTA service.
  • Outlook 8.01 client running on Windows 95
  • Outlook 8.02 client running on Windows 95

When you send an attachment from the Macintosh client and read it with an Outlook client, the size of the file differs between Outlook 8.01 and 8.02. Outlook 8.02 reports the attachment as being larger than in version 8.01. When opened in version 8.02, data seems to be appended to the beginning of the file making it potentially unreadable by its associated program. This behavior is not present in Outlook version 8.01.
