SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, when you format a label on a chart, you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If you click Details, a message similar to the following appears:

Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Mso97.dll at 0137:3084bc03.

When you click Close, Excel quits.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following to your chart:

  1. You apply fill effects to the background of the data labels for an entire series.
  2. You either select or change the text in a single data label.
  3. You format the border of that single data label.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.
