The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows, Service Release 1 (SR-1)
  • == Microsoft Works for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5, 4.5a ==

SYMPTOMS

If you have installed the Microsoft Office 97, Service Release 1 and you try to save a Microsoft Works Word Processor document as Word 6.0/95 format in Works 4.x, you may receive the following error message:

There was a problem converting the document

When you click OK, you see the following message:

Cannot save the document C:<filename>.doc. Choose the Save As command again and specify a different name or location for your document.

When you click OK, the file is saved and you can open it in Microsoft Word.

CAUSE

The new export converter Wrd6ex32.cnv, installed by the Office SR-1 Patch, is causing the problem.

MORE INFORMATION

For additional information about converting between Word and Works, please see the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: For additional information about , please see the following article(s) in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Both Works for Windows 95 and Word 97 have import converters to open the other’s word processing formats. The easiest way to convert documents between the programs is to save the documents in the native format and let the importing program use the converter to convert the files.

WORKAROUND

To workaround the error messages, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Microsoft has created a self extracting file called Wordconv.exe that resolves this error message. For additional information regarding this issue, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q174477 Works 95: Word Converter Patch for Works 95 Available on MSL

Method 2

In Works, save the file as a Works 4.x document, and then let Word 97 use the Works converter to open the file.

Method 3

In Word, save the file in Works 4.0 for Windows format. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save As Type box, click Works 4.0 for Windows.
  3. Name the file and click Save.

Method 4

In Word, save the file as a Word 97 document, and then let Works use the Word converter to open the file.
