PRJ98: Error Opening an Earlier Version File Containing a Macro

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you open a file saved in an earlier version of Microsoft Project, you may receive the following Microsoft Visual Basic error

Unexpected error

followed by this error:


An unexpected error occurred during command execution.
Try one of the following:

  • Check that all argument names and values are correct and are of the correct type.
  • You may have run out of memory. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using.


CAUSE

This error message occurs when the file contains a Visual Basic module with a name longer than 31 characters. In Microsoft Project 98 module names are limited to 31 characters. In contrast, in Microsoft Project for Windows 95, version 4.x, module names are limited to 51 characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reopen the file in the earlier version of Microsoft Project, and rename the module so that it contains no more than 31 characters.
