ActiMates/SideWinder: Configuring Echo Speech Sound Cards

SUMMARY

This article describes how to configure the Echo Sound Echo Speech sound card for use with Microsoft ActiMates characters or the SideWinder Force Feedback Pro joystick.

This information was tested with the following sound card drivers:

The Echo Sound Echo Speech sound card is supplied with Windows 3.1 drivers only. To install the Echo Speech drivers in Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Echo Speech installation disk into your floppy disk drive.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type a:\install.exe, and then click OK.
  4. Click Start, and then click Run.
  5. In the Open box, type sysedit, and then click OK.
  6. Edit the System.ini file and remove the following lines from the corresponding sections:

    [386enh]
    device=vecho.386

    [drivers]
    mixer=echodsp.drv
    aux=echodsp.drv
    midi=echodsp.drv
    wave=echodsp.drv

  7. On the File menu, click Exit. When you are prompted to save changes, click Yes.
  8. Click Start, and then click Run.
  9. In the Open box, type a:\loadecho.exe, and then click OK.
  10. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
  11. In the Named box, type loadecho.exe, and then click Find Now.
  12. In the list of found files, make sure the Loadecho.exe file is located in the Windows folder.
  13. Click New Search, and then click OK.
  14. In the Named box, type sball.ld, and then click Find Now.
  15. In the list of found files, make sure the Sball.ld file is located in the Windows folder.
  16. Click Start, and then click Run.
  17. In the Open box, type sysedit, and then click OK.
  18. Edit the Autoexec.bat file and make sure the following lines are present:

    c:\windows\loadecho
    c:\windows\sball

  19. Add the following line to the Autoexec.bat file:

    SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T4

  20. Open the System.ini and write down the contents of the following section:

    [echodsp.drv]

    Add the following line to this section if it is not present (joystick only):

    joystick=on

  21. Restart the computer.
  22. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  23. Double-click Add New Hardware.
  24. Click Next, click Yes, and then click Next.

    NOTE: If you are using Windows 98, click Next, click Next, click Yes, and then click Next.
  25. Click Next. If you receive a message about a hardware conflict, do not start the Hardware Conflict Troubleshooter.
  26. Click Finish. If you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes. The listing under Sound, Video And Game Controllers in Device Manager should read:

    • MPU-401 Compatible
    • Gameport Joystick
    • Windows Sound System Sound Blaster Emulation
    • Creative Labs Sound Blaster Pro



  27. Double-click the listing for Creative Labs Sound Blaster Pro.
  28. On the Resources tab, make sure the settings match those listed in the System.ini file (which you wrote down in step 20 above). If the settings do not match, manually change the settings to match those listed in the System.ini file.
  29. Click OK or Close until you return to Windows. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
  30. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  31. Double-click Multimedia.
  32. On the Advanced or Devices tab, double-click MIDI Devices And Instruments.
  33. Double-click MIDI For MPU-401 Compatible or MIDI For External MIDI Port.
  34. On the Details tab, click General MIDI Instrument, and then click OK.
  35. Click OK. If you are prompted to restart Windows, click Yes.
