SYMPTOMS

When the Windows Desktop Update component is installed, the "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" option does not work in the left pane in Windows Explorer, or in common dialog boxes (dialog boxes such as Save As that are shared by many programs).

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

When the "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" option is enabled, objects you point to are selected and the mouse pointer changes to a hand. To open an object, click (rather than double-click) it. To enable the "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" option, use either of the following methods:

NOTE: The Windows Desktop Update component must be installed for the "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" option to be available.

  • On the View menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options, click Web Style, and then click OK. You may receive the following prompt:

    Single-click

Web style offers you an easier way to work with your desktop and folder icons.

Single-click lets you click once to open any icon. To select an icon, just point at it.

Are you sure you want to use single-click?

Click Yes, and then click OK.
  • On the View menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options, click "Custom, based on settings you choose," click Settings, click "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" under Current Settings, click OK, and then click OK.

The left pane in Windows Explorer and common dialog boxes retain their classic functionality even when the "Single-click to open an item (point to select)" option is enabled.
