XL97: Gridlines Are Displayed Incorrectly in Print Preview

Article ID: 172775

Article Last Modified on 10/22/2000

  • Microsoft Excel 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q172775

When you print gridlines in a workbook in Microsoft Excel 97, and the print quality of the workbook is set to 150 dots per inch (dpi) or less, the gridlines may appear as thick gray lines in print preview. However, the output is printed normally.

Note that the gridlines appear especially thick when the print quality is set to 75 dpi.

This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

  • You set the print quality to 150 dpi or less on the Sheet tab of the Page Setup dialog box.

  • You print to a printer that uses the Universal Printer Driver, Unidrv.dll. This includes most laser printers and inkjet printers.

NOTE: PostScript printers do not use Unidrv.dll, so they are not affected.

  • You select the Gridlines check box in the Page Setup dialog box.

  • You are using Microsoft Windows 95

NOTE: The printed output of worksheets does not exhibit the symptom. Only print preview is affected.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.

For more information about print preview, click the Index tab in Microsoft Excel 97 Help, type the following text

Print Preview

and then double-click the selected text to go to the "About the Print Preview Window" topic.
