XFOR: Spectating Channel Members with Channel Services May Fail

Article ID: 172627

Article Last Modified on 9/30/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 1.0 Service Pack 2

This article was previously published under Q172627

SYMPTOMS

When you are using multiple Microsoft Chat Server computers with Channel Services, making a channel member a spectator (spectating) using Channel Services will fail if the Channel Service is running on a remote Chat Server server. This only affects spectating members using Channel Services across linked Chat Server servers. It does not prevent a sysop from spectating a channel member manually.

CAUSE

This problem is due to the Microsoft Chat Server not replicating the channel member mode update over the server-to-server connection when a Channel Service makes a member change.

RESOLUTION

Chatsvc.dll was modified to change the method used to determine which property update messages are replicated over multiple servers.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet System, version 1.0. A supported fix is now available, but is not fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services for more information.
