SUMMARY
This article describes how to replace all auto-numbered footnote reference marks and associated text with static text. This is useful if you want to remove footnote or endnote formatting, but still retain the reference numbers in the proper superscript formatting.
NOTE: This process requires familiarity with inserting field codes in Microsoft Word versions 6.0 or later.

At the beginning of the document, type the following field code:

NOTE: To create field braces, press CTRL+F9 (Windows) or Command key+F9 (Macintosh). - Select the field code you just created. Be sure to include the field braces but no extra characters outside the braces; for example, do not include a paragraph mark. On the Edit menu, click Cut.
- On the Edit menu, click Replace.
Click in the Find What box. Click Special, and then click Footnote Mark (or Endnote Mark if appropriate).
NOTE: If the Special button is not visible, click More. - Click in the Replace With box. Click Special, and then click Clipboard Contents.
- Click Format, and then click Font. Under Effects, click to select the Superscript check box. Click OK.
- In the Search list, click All to search the whole document.
- Click Replace All, click OK, and then click Close to return to the document.
- On the Edit menu, click Select All and press F9 to update all the fields in the document. This updates the numbers in the sequence fields, along with any other fields in the document.
Convert the sequence fields to static text. To do this, select the text that contains the fields and press CTRL+Shift+F9 (Windows) or COMMAND+Shift+F9 (Macintosh).
NOTE: This converts all fields in the selection to static text. If there are other fields in the document that you do not want to convert, make sure they are not part of the selection before using this command.
Word removes the footnote (or endnote) formatting. The text can now be copied and pasted without the extra formatting information.
This procedure only applies to footnotes and endnotes that are inserted using the AutoNumber feature. You must modify custom footnote or endnote marks manually.
Footnote reference marks are also preserved when you save the file in text only format. However, the Superscript formatting is lost and the numbers appear as large as the surrounding text.
