The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95
SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Internet Explorer 4.0, Setup may not start, or you may receive the following error message:
Setup cannot upgrade the current version of Internet Explorer. You must Uninstall it before you can install this version of Internet Explorer. Setup cannot continue.
In addition, there may be no TrueType fonts listed in the Fonts folder.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you have removed a previous installation of Internet Explorer 4.0 using the Ieremove.exe tool.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
Use the Fontreg.exe tool to add the registry key that enables TrueType fonts. For information about using the Fontreg.exe tool, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Rename the following files in the Windows\System folder.
NOTE: One or more of these file may have been deleted.

- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders. In the Named box, type "iexplore.exe" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Iexplore.exe file, and then click Rename. Rename the file to Iexplore.xxx.
- Run Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup again.

Ieremove.exe is a tool included with Internet Explorer 4.0 to help remove Internet Explorer if you cannot remove it using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
