MSN Sign-In Screen Prompts You to Connect Periodically

Last reviewed: October 7, 1997
Article ID: Q172513

The information in this article applies to:

  • The Microsoft Network version 2.5

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

The Sign-In screen for MSN, The Microsoft Network, may periodically appear and prompt you to connect to MSN.

CAUSE

The Startup folder may contain a shortcut to MSNBC News Alert.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Remove the MSNBC News Alert shortcut from the Startup folder. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Start button, and then click Open.
  2. Double-click the Programs folder.
  3. Double-click the Startup folder.
  4. Right-click the MSNBC News Alert shortcut, and then click Delete.

Method 2

Close MSNBC News Alert. To do so, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the MSNBC icon on the taskbar, and then click Exit.
  2. Click Yes.

Because this method does not remove the MSNBC News Alert shortcut from the Startup folder, it is only effective until you restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

NOTE: For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

If MSNBC News Alert still starts automatically or there is no shortcut to MSNBC News Alert in the startup folder, follow these steps:

  1. Delete the MSNBC News Alert entry from the following registry key:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
  2. Restart the computer.
