SYMPTOMS

If you install a custom add-in, and then start Microsoft Excel, the following error message appears.

Microsoft Windows 95

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be Shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Excel caused an invalid page fault in Module Excel.exe at 0137:301180F6

Microsoft Windows NT

Dr. Watson for Windows NT: An Application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Excel.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x301180f6

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You install a custom add-in that updates toolbars.


-and-

  • You open Excel without opening any workbooks.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.
