The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send a signed or encrypted message, you may receive the following error message:

   The message could not be sent.
   You have not chosen the default certificate for sending digitally 
   signed messages.

CAUSE

You may have edited the message in the Outbox before it was sent.

RESOLUTION

Do not edit signed or encrypted messages in the Outbox.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the error message states that you have not chosen a default certificate to send messages with, this is incorrect. The problem stems from editing the message in the special Outbox folder.
