SYMPTOMS
When you use one of the Microsoft pointing devices listed at the beginning of this article, the wheel may not function properly, even if Device Manager correctly identifies the mouse as "Mouse with Wheel."
In addition, when you click to select or clear the Turn On The Wheel check box on the Wheel tab in the Mouse Properties dialog box, you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:
- You are running a program that is incompatible with the IntelliMouse wheel.
- The IntelliPoint software is not installed correctly or is damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.
Quit Unnecessary Programs that Are Running on Your Computer
- Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
- In the Close Program dialog box, click any program except Explorer, Systray, Mswheel, or Point32, and then click End Task.
NOTE: Explorer and Systray are components of Microsoft Windows, and Mswheel and Point32 are components of the IntelliPoint software.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 to quit all programs except Explorer, Systray, Mswheel, and Point32.
If the IntelliMouse wheel now functions properly, one of the programs that you quit is incompatible with the IntelliMouse wheel.
If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.
Clean Boot the Computer
Clean boot the computer to determine if the issue is caused by a command or a driver that starts automatically when you start the computer. To do this, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Windows.
Microsoft Windows 98
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- Click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process Autoexec.bat file
- Process Config.sys file
- Process Winstart.bat file
- Load startup group items
NOTE: If any of these check boxes are unavailable, the related file is empty or does not exist.
- Click the Win.ini tab.
- Double-click the Windows folder.
- Click to clear the load= and the run= check boxes.
- Click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
