Unable To Test URL Without Specifying Protocol

Article ID: 172135

Article Last Modified on 1/1/2000

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit 3.2a

This article was previously published under Q172135

SYMPTOMS

If an administrator does not specify a protocol (such as http://) to use when testing a URL link connection in the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) wizard, no URL link will be found.

CAUSE

In the IEAK wizard there are several places, such as the Start or Search pages, that allow an administrator to customize internet or intranet locations.

Unlike Internet Explorer, where an administrator can enter a simple "server_name" in the address box of the toolbar is allowed (as Internet Explorer will insert the proper protocol, resulting in "http://server_name"), an administrator cannot specify simply "server_name" (instead of "http://server_name") as the start page.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, the administrator must enter "http://server_name" to successfully test a URL link in the IEAK wizard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer Administration Kit version 3.2a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
