The information in this article applies to:

  • Softimage 3D for IRIX, version 3.7
  • Softimage 3D for Windows NT, version 3.7

SUMMARY

This article is provided to give you a brief explanation of when Adaptive Supersampling and Displacement Mapping are performed.

To begin with, the two processes are completely separate operations.

  - Displacement mapping occurs when the surfaces are subdivided
    (preprocessing before rendering ever starts). Vertices are displaced
    along the object normals. This is independent of object scaling, etc.

  - Adaptive supersampling takes place between the rays that are fired out
    from the camera during rendering.
