PPT97: Creating PowerPoint Viewer 97 Disks from Ppview97.exe

Q171244

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows

SUMMARY

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97 allows you to share Microsoft PowerPoint presentations with other people who do not have PowerPoint installed on their computers. PowerPoint Viewer 97 makes it easy for you to post full fidelity PowerPoint presentations on the Internet to expand your online audience to people who might not have PowerPoint. It allows those who do not have Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows to view and print PowerPoint presentations, but it does not allow them to edit those presentations.

You may copy and distribute PowerPoint Viewer 97 to your friends and co- workers or post it on public electronic bulletin boards.

When you download PowerPoint Viewer 97 from an online service, you get a single file called Ppview97.exe, which is too large to fit on a single disk. This article describes how to create disks of the PowerPoint Viewer from the online distribution file.

MORE INFORMATION

For information about obtaining PowerPoint Viewer 97, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: PowerPoint Viewer 97 is not the same viewer that ships with Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows and Microsoft Office 97 for Windows.

Copying the Ppview97.exe to Disks

To copy the Ppview97.exe file to disks, obtain PkWare's PKZip (version 2.04 or later) file compression utility and format two 1.44 megabyte (MB) disks.

  1. Copy the Ppview97.exe to the root directory on your C:\ drive.
  2. Insert the first blank disk into the A:\ drive.
  3. On the Windows Start menu, point to programs, point to Accessories and then click MS-DOS Command Prompt.
  4. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following command:

    pkzip -& a:\viewer.zip c:\ppview97.exe

    Press ENTER.

This command will create an archive that spans two disks. PKZip will prompt you to insert the second disk when it is needed.

Installing the PowerPoint Viewer from the Disk Set

NOTE: To follow these instructions you must have PKWare's PKUnZip (version 2.04 or later) file decompression utility installed on your computer. You must also have a 1.44 MB disk drive.

  1. Create a new folder on your hard disk. For example, create a folder called Ppvw97.
  2. Insert the first disk into your disk drive.
  3. On the Windows Start menu, point to programs, point to Accessories and then click MS-DOS Command Prompt.
  4. At the MS-DOS prompt type the following:

    pkunzip a:\viewer.zip c:\ppvw97\ppview97.exe

    Press ENTER.

  5. Insert the second disk when prompted.
  6. When PKUnzip is finished, type exit and then press ENTER.
  7. In Windows Explorer, open the C:\Ppvw97 folder.
  8. Double-click the Ppview97.exe file to install PowerPoint Viewer 97.

For more information about using PKZip.exe and PKUnzip.exe, please see the file Manual.doc which is included with PKZip.
