SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the AutoComplete feature in the versions of Internet Explorer listed above. The AutoComplete feature suggests matches for Internet addresses as you type them, and can suggest matches for folders and program names as you type them in the Address box. Note that this feature is available in the following areas:

  • The Address box in Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, or on the desktop or taskbar.
  • The Open box for the Run command on the Start menu.
  • The Open box for the Open command on the File menu in Internet Explorer.

MORE INFORMATION

The AutoComplete feature makes suggestions by completing the address or command you type with the nearest match. The nearest match is determined by examining your History folder, the contents of the folder you specify, the contents of the Folders pane in Windows Explorer, or a list of your most recently typed addresses or commands (which are stored in the registry).

To use the AutoComplete feature to automatically complete an Internet address, folder name, or program name, start typing. If one or more matches exist, the AutoComplete feature suggests the nearest match by automatically completing the address, folder name, or program name as you type. To accept the match, press ENTER.

To clear the list of most recently typed addresses:

  1. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Options or Internet Options on the View menu.
  2. Click Clear History.
  3. When you are prompted to delete all items in your History folder, click OK.
  4. Click OK.

To disable the AutoComplete feature:

  1. Start Internet Explorer, and then click Options or Internet Options on the View menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Under Browsing, click the Use AutoComplete check box to clear it.
  4. Click OK.
