The "Enable Access Control" option is not available after you install Proxy Server

Article ID: 171121

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Proxy Server 1.0 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Proxy Server, the Enable Access Control option in Microsoft Internet Service Manager, Web Proxy Service Properties, Permissions may not be available.

CAUSE

The Enable Access Control option for the Web Proxy Service Properties is restricted because Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) is configured to use Anonymous as the only authentication method.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use NTLM authentication or Basic authentication, also known as clear text authentication. Use these authentication methods if you want to restrict access to the proxy server. If you want all clients to have access to the proxy server, you must use Anonymous authentication. To help increase security for an intranet, use Basic authentication together with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Note Because Basic authentication together with SSL uses more server processing resources than clear text authentication, server performance may be reduced.

For more information about how to configure IIS to use different authentication methods, see the IIS online product documentation that is installed when you install IIS.
