The maximum length of an Internet Mail account name is 32 characters, if you are using the original Microsoft Outlook 97 Internet Mail service. This limit is 255 characters with the Internet Mail Enhancement Patch (IMEP) installed.
To Enter an Internet Mail Account Name
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Click the Internet Mail Service and then click Properties.
- If you are NOT using the IMEP, the Account Name is on the General tab of the Internet Mail dialog box. If you ARE using the IMEP, the Account Name is on the Servers tab of the IMEP Properties dialog box.
For a complete list of improvements included in the patch, refer to the following knowledge base article:

To obtain the IMEP, click Help on the Outlook toolbar, point to Microsoft on the Web and click Free Stuff. Click "Internet Mail Enhancement Patch Final Release" to download and install the patch.
