PPT97: Undo Typing Doesn't Remove all Text Just Entered

Article ID: 170614

Article Last Modified on 11/9/2000

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q170614

SYMPTOMS

The text you entered in a text placeholder is not deleted when you click Undo Typing on the Edit menu.

CAUSE

Your text contains an apostrophe or a quotation mark and you have the "Replace straight quotes with smart quotes" option selected on the Edit tab in the Options dialog box (click Options on the Tools menu). When this option is turned on and you type a quotation mark or apostrophe, the quotation mark or apostrophe changes to a "curly" or smart quotation mark or apostrophe. By design, the Undo Typing command on the Edit menu, allows you to restore the straight quotation mark or apostrophe, in case you do not want to use the smart quotation mark or apostrophe.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, turn off the "Replace straight quotes with smart quotes" option, using the following steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Edit tab.
  3. Click to clear the "Replace straight quotes with smart quotes" check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
