SYMPTOMS

When you run other programs after removing Microsoft Office 97, you receive error messages stating that the Msencode.dll file cannot be found.

CAUSE

When you run the Microsoft Office 97 Setup program and click Remove All, the Setup program removes the Msencode.dll shared system file. Other programs that use the Msencode.dll text converter, such as Microsoft Publisher, do not work properly without this system file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, copy the Msencode.dll file from the Microsoft Office 97 CD. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the Os\Msapps\Textconv folder on the Office 97 CD.
  2. Copy the Msencode.dll file to the Windows\System folder.

NOTE: if you are running Microsoft Windows NT, copy the file to the Windows\System32 folder.

For more information about how to perform this task in Windows, see your Windows printed documentation or Windows Help.
