SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 97 as the e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook 97 and you use the Internet Mail service, messages formatted with certain fonts may appear as a series of question marks ("???").

RESOLUTION

This only occurs when you are using WordMail. To switch to the Outlook e- mail editor rather than WordMail, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the E-mail tab, click to clear "Use Microsoft Word as the e-mail editor," then click OK.

When you compose new messages in Outlook, you can use the same font and it will display correctly when read.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 97. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Start Outlook 97 with the Internet Mail service in your profile.
  2. On the Tools menu, select Options.
  3. Click the E-mail tab, click to select "Use Microsoft Word as the e-mail editor," then click OK.
  4. Compose a new message and address it to yourself.
  5. Type some text in the body of the message and format it using a non-standard font like Arial Narrow Special G1.
  6. On the Tools menu, click "Check for New Mail" to send the message.
  7. Wait a few minutes, then repeat step 6 to receive the message.
  8. Double-click the message to open and read it. A series of question marks displays instead of the text you typed.
