MORE INFORMATION

SOFTIMAGE 3D Error Messages

If SOFTIMAGE 3D fails to start, the following is a list of errors that may occur. The error message is located in either the shell where SOFTIMAGE 3D was started, or in the console window if SOFTIMAGE 3D was started from the toolchest.

NOTE: In this document, <flex_install_path> refers to the location of the flexlm directory on your license server. The default location for <flex_install_path> with SI3D is /usr/softimage/flexlm.

  1. "Cannot connect to license server[-15, 10....]"

This indicates one of two problems:

    - There is a typographical or syntax error in your softimage.dat file.

For more information, see Rules for Entering License Information.

    - Your FLEXlm client cannot connect to the license server due to a

network problem. If you are unable to "ping" the FLEXlm license
         server, check your network configuration.

    - The vendor daemon is down. From the Installation dialog box, choose

Licensing -> License Server Administration. In the SI3D License
         dialog box select Start Server.

    - You have a FLEXlm configuration conflict. If you have installed SI

Eddie V3.5, refer to Combining Your SI3D and SI Eddie Licenses. If you
are using another software package that uses FLEXlm, refer to
Combining License Files in the SOFTIMAGE 3D Installation Guide.
  2. "Cannot find license file [-1,73:.....]"

See the next error message "Encryption code in license file is inconsistent."

  3. "Encryption code in license file is inconsistent [-8,.....]"

This indicates one of the following problems:

    - Have you requested, received, and installed a valid license from the

Softimage Licensing department? Forward your license request by e-mail
to license@softimage.com or send a fax to 514-845-3944 or 514-845-
         1280.

    - There is a typographical or syntax error in your softimage.dat file.

For more information, see Rules for Entering License Information.

    - Is the environment variable LM_LICENSE_FILE set correctly in the

softimage.dat file? See Installing the FLEXlm License in the SOFTIMAGE
3D Installation Guide on page 17.

    - The system ID (sysid) encrypted in the license file may not match the

machine sysid, or the sysid was accidentally specified with spaces
between the characters. To check this, type sysinfo in an IRIX shell.
Compare the first eight characters of the system ID to the numbers
That follow your machine's host name on the SERVER line. If they do
not match and you are working on a network, make sure you are
installing the correct license on the right machine. If you do not
have a machine with the sysid specified in your license file, contact
         Softimage Product Support Services.
  4. "Feature has expired [-10,....]"

This indicates one of the following problems:

    - The feature has actually expired. Check the expiration date on the

INCREMENT line in your license file.

    - The date and time on your computer may be incorrect. Verify that the

time and date on your computer is correct by typing 'date' in a UNIX
shell. If you are working on a network, you must verify that all
computers on the network have the correct date.
Contact Softimage Product Support and Services if the problem
         persists.
  5. "No such feature exists [-5, ....]"

This indicates one of the following problems:

    - There is a typographical or syntax error in your softimage.dat file.

For more information, see Rules for Entering License Information.

    - The license file does not contain the component that you currently

require. If you are registered for this component, contact Softimage
         Product Support and Services.

    - The wrong license is being referenced by the application. Verify the

         following:
         - Your softimage.dat license file is in the correct directory
           ($SI_LOCATION/flexlm/bin/license).
         - Check the contents of the license file to verify that it is the
           correct license to be used.
         - The environment variable LM_LICENSE_FILE in the .softimage file
located at $SI_LOCATION) points to the correct license file for
           SOFTIMAGE 3D version 3.7.
  6. "Cannot find SERVER hostname in network database [-14, ... : ...]"

This indicates one of the following problems:

    - The host name in your license file is wrong. Correct the host name on

the SERVER line of the softimage.dat file. Note that it is case-
         sensitive.

    - Confirm that the host name is in the /etc/hosts file and that "local"

appears on the hostresorder line of /etc/resolv.conf file.

    - The LM_LICENSE_FILE environment variable is pointing to a non-existent

server. This variable is located in the .softimage file. Use the ping
command to verify that the server is correct: if it is not correct,
         check your network configuration.
  7. "Invalid date format in license file [-11, ....]"

There is a typographical or syntax error in your softimage.dat license file. For more information, see Rules for Entering License Information in reference to the following:

    - You may have an error on an INCREMENT line of the license file. Open

your softimage.dat file and check how the expiration date has been
entered on each INCREMENT line. Check that there are no characters or
spaces after the backslash (\) at the end of each line.

    - Check the INCREMENT line of your original license and make sure that

the expiration date is correct (that is, permanent license should read
1-jan-0). Contact Softimage Product Support and Services if the expiry
         date is incorrect.
  8. "No server line in license file [-13,... : ...]"

This indicates one of two problems:

    - You installed as a FLEXlm Client instead of as a Server. Go back to

the installation program and install using the FLEXlm Server option.
(See Installing the FLEXlm License in the SOFTIMAGE 3D Installation
         Guide on page 17.)

    - There is a typographical error on the SERVER line of the license file.

Verify that SERVER is in uppercase letters (see Rules for Entering
         License Information).
  9. "Cannot successfully map soname 'libsoftgraphic.so'"

You are still using the environment variables set for a previous version of SOFTIMAGE 3D. To update the .softimage file (the location where these variables are set), see Creating a SOFTIMAGE 3D User Account in the SOFTIMAGE 3D Installation Guide on page 29.

  10. "dbLoadRelationDictionary / Cannot load Relation.rsrc.

A previous version of the FLEXlm software is running on the license server. You must upgrade FLEXlm to version 5.0. To do this, follow the steps Upgrading the License Server to FLEXlm Version 5.0 in the SOFTIMAGE 3D Installation Guide on page 6.

  11. "libvl.so"

You may be missing the new IRIX N32 system libraries (dmedia eoe sw32.lib) that is required by SOFTIMAGE 3D to run. You must install the Digital Media Extension from your IRIX installation CDs or contact SGI Technical Support for assistance.

  12. "Feature not yet available [-31, ....]"

You may be missing the number of licenses from the INCREMENT line in your license file. Check this line to confirm that you have entered your license properly. See Rules for Entering License Information for more information.

  13. "Bad version number - must be floating point number, with no letters [-77,... : ...]"

This occurs when a line in your license file has an invalid version number. Make sure that version number on the PACKAGE and INCREMENT lines is 3.500. See Rules for Entering License Information for more information.

  14. "Socket ( ) call failed [-57, ... : ...]"

Refer to the error message "Cannot connect to license server."

Rules for Entering License Information

The primary cause of SOFTIMAGE 3D not running after installation is an error in the license file. This can either be a typographical error or a mailer/editor line wrap error. Check that your license file ($SI_LOCATION/flexlm/licenses/softimage.dat) conforms to the following rules.

Be aware of the following when entering your license information:

  • Verify that the backslashes (\) at the end of the PACKAGE and INCREMENT lines are followed with a hard return and not a space. In addition to this, there must be a space before the backslash ( \).
  • Check that each line following PACKAGE and INCREMENT is indented with one space (using the space bar, not the Tab key).
  • Do not use tabs.
  • If you received your SOFTIMAGE 3D License Confirmation by e-mail, lines that are particularly long in your license file may wrap around to the next line. If a backslash (\) appears anywhere other than the end of a line, it has been incorrectly wrapped by a mailer/editor. This is considered a typographical error when you try to run SOFTIMAGE 3D.
  • Do not add spaces: they are considered typos.
  • If you have made corrections to the license file, you must reboot your machine.

Upgrading Your License to Softimage 3D Version 3.7

If you are upgrading SOFTIMAGE 3D from a previous version, you must upgrade FLEXlm software on the license server(s). For more information, see Upgrading the License Server to FLEXlm Version 5.0 in the SOFTIMAGE 3D Installation Guide on page 6.
