SYMPTOMS
The Style list on the Formatting toolbar may not be displayed in alphabetical order.
CAUSE
In Microsoft Word 97, styles are grouped by their classification. In earlier versions of Microsoft Word, they are listed alphabetically.
STATUS
This functionality is a design change in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.

Styles are displayed in the following order in the Style list:
- Heading styles
- Normal style
- User-defined styles
- Body Text styles
- List styles
- All other styles listed alphabetically
The following sample list shows how styles are ordered:

This order cannot be changed.
