This article was previously published under Q170241

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you assign a resource to a task that has a percent complete, the resource will be assigned work for the total duration of the task. For each subsequent resource, work will be calculated on the remaining duration.

CAUSE

For the first assignment a resource is assigned to the total duration of the task regardless of the percent complete.

WORKAROUND

To change the amount of work a resource is assigned, manually edit the amount of work.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

For each additional resource the work will be calculated based on the remaining duration of the task. To change the original resource assignment manually edit the amount of work.

For example, let's assume you have a task that is 8 days long at 50% complete. When you assign a resource to the task, the work for the resource will be 64 hours with 32 hours of actual work and 32 hours of remaining work. When you assign a second resource to the task, the work for the first resource will change to 48 hours (32 actual hours plus 16 hour or one-half the remaining work). The work for the second resource will be 16 hours, which is one-half the remaining work.
