PPT97: Save As HTML Command Unavailable (Dimmed)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft PowerPoint 97, the Save As HTML command on the File menu may be unavailable (dimmed).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur for two reasons. If you did not install the Web Page Authoring (HTML) component when you installed PowerPoint 97 (it is not installed by default) then this this behavior occurs. Also, if one or more of the files or registry settings necessary for saving as HTML are damaged, this behavior can occur.

RESOLUTION

Make Sure Web Page Authoring is Installed

To install the Web Page Authoring (HTML) component, use the following steps:

Quit all applications.
On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
In the list of programs, click Microsoft Office 97 or Microsoft PowerPoint 97, and then click Add/Remove.
In the Office 97 or PowerPoint 97 Setup dialog box, click Add/Remove.
Click to select the Web Page Authoring (HTML) check box.
Click Continue and follow the instructions on your screen.

You should now be able to save PowerPoint presentations as HTML. If you are still having a problem, proceed to the second step.

Make Sure the Save as HTML Files and Registry Settings are Correct

The files and the Registry entries for the following Save as HTML files may be missing or corrupt:

ppt2html.dll
ppt2html.srg
ppt2html.ppa

NOTE: You will need your PowerPoint CD-ROM to follow these steps.

On the Start menu, point to Search (or Find, depending on your version of Windows), and then click Files or Folders.
In the named field, type pp2html.* In the Look In drop-down list, select Local Hard Drives, and then click Search Now.
The search should return three files. Right-click each of them, and then click Rename. Rename each file.
Close the Search Results window.
On the Start menu, click Run. In the Open field, type Regedit, and then click OK.

Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\PowerPoint\PPT2HTML

Click the PPT2HTML folder so that it is highlighted.

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and click Yes when prompted.
Close the Registry Editor.
Rerun PowerPoint setup. When prompted, choose Reinstall.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
