APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Excel 97 Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q169353

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, if you click Cut Cells on the Insert menu, the window from which you cut the cells may disappear from the screen or become nonresponsive.

If you click Unhide on the Window menu, the window is not listed as a hidden window.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • In one workbook (for example, Book1), you cut one or more cells when in group edit mode (while multiple worksheets are selected). -and-

  • You switch to another workbook (for example, Book2), and then click Cut Cells on the Insert menu.

NOTE: This problem does not occur in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, exit group edit mode before you cut and insert cells from one workbook to another. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the sheet tab of one of the selected worksheets.
  2. On the shortcut menu, click Ungroup Sheets.

You can then cut cells from one workbook and insert the cells into another workbook.

If the problem already occurred, you must close the invisible or unresponsive workbook. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. On the Window menu, click the menu item for the invisible workbook.
  2. On the File menu, click Close.

You may be prompted to save the workbook.

When you reopen the workbook, it appears normally regardless of whether you saved it in step 2.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem no longer occurs in Microsoft Excel 2000.
