XL97: Cell Displays Zero with Angled Text and Small Row Height

SYMPTOMS

When changing the height of a row in Microsoft Excel, any cell in the row displays a zero instead of its proper contents.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You format the cell to use text that is angled in a range between -41 and +41 degrees orientation. -and-


  • You recently decreased the height of the row that contains the cell in question. -and-


  • The number format of the cell is the General format.


WORKAROUND

If you apply a number format to the cell in question, the problem no longer occurs. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Select the cell with the angled text. On the Format menu, click Cells.
  2. In the Format Cells dialog box, click the Number tab. Select the category and number format that you want to display. Click OK.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article.
